Inside the mind of serial killers – are they born to kill?

Are Serial Killers Born Bad or Man-Made Monsters? ‹ CrimeReads

Are Serial Killers born or are they made? I've always wondered which one is the answer. I feel like there is always a case that can be made for both sides. One of the things that we see in a lot of serial killers is that they have been abused, psychologically or physically. You can argue that this is a big factor as to why serial killers are the way they are but then again, there are some serial killers who grow up wanting to commit evil. When I say commit evil I mean people who grow up killing animals. The article shows how the argument that serial killers are born the way they are when it says," Ted Bundy, for instance, already exhibited abnormal behavior at a very young age – at the age of 3 he was already interested in knives and in his teenage years he would continually spy on other people’s windows". However, the article counters this when it talks about Ed Kemper. It says," His grandmother was also very abusive and at the age of 15 he ended up killing her and then his grandfather in fear of his reaction. Between May 1972 and February 1973, he embarked on a series of six murders, in which he collected hitchhiking girls and transported them to a wooded area where he would kill them and rape the dead bodies". He was emotionally and physically abused at a young age by his mother and again by his grandmother who he evidently killed later on. The way a serial killer is "made" is confusing because," ...A study by Mitchell H et al showed that on average 36% of serial killers experienced physical abuse, 26% experienced sexual abuse, and 50% experienced psychological abuse". This doesn't mean every person who has been physically abused or sexually abused at a young age become serial killers. I believe serial killers are born and I feel as if it has to do with their genes. This is an opinion so I more than likely wrong but what if people like Jeffrey Dahmer who weren't sexually abused from a young age became a serial killer because his dad or someone in his family tree carried MAOA and CDH13. This is the killer gene that the majority of violent killers carry. According to mirror.co.uk,"At least about 5–10% of all severe violent crime in Finland is attributable to the aforementioned MAOA and CDH13 genotypes". There isn't a definite answer as to why serial killers are the way they are. Hopefully, there can be definitive answer to end this debate.
